Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort
History & Story
The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of string of a small sandy islands lying roughly 25-35 kilometers from the main land north of Vilanculos and South of Inhassoro. One of the few parts of Mozambique that was safe to visit during the closing years of the civil war, the Bazaruto Islands have developed a high-end tourist industry that functions in near isolation from the rest of the country. Today a peaceful and safe destination, the Bazaruto Archipelago continues developing its touristic activities alongside Vilanculos and the entire Inhambane province, established in 2019 as the tourism capital of Mozambique.

Fun Facts
“ Gichile ! “
“Good Morning” in Bazaruto community local language.
The archipelago has about 5,000 residents in seven communities. They mostly use the natural resources of the islands. Most prominent was the immigration of people from the mainland during the war years when the relative safety of the Bazaruto Archipelago attracted thousands of refugees. Artisanal fishing with traditional methods is the main economic activity for more than 70% of the local population. The islands have a long history of artisanal fisheries, evident from age-old middens containing clay pottery and a variety of shells. As many as 60 fishing camps may be found in the archipelago, providing fresh seafood to communities and tourists.
The island’s residents are part of the vahoka population, speakers of the Xihoca language, exclusively spoken on the islands of Bazaruto Archipelago.
