History & Story
The Cape Grace story started in 1994, not simply with the ambition to build a hotel, but with a belief in creating something that truly belonged to Cape Town. Charles Brand was unwavering in his vision — not just to be part of the Waterfront, but to stand on the marina itself, where the rhythm of the harbour and the presence of Table Mountain could be felt in every moment. Securing this exact place required patience and quiet persistence. David Jack, then CEO of the Waterfront, would later recall a young man who returned time and again, determined to bring his vision to life. With the guidance of Delano Caras, that vision was finally realised — a rare position, shaped as much by conviction as by opportunity.
When Cape Grace opened in December 1996, it introduced something deeply personal. More than a hotel, it became a home on the water, a place where stories are shared, where guests are known, and where the spirit of the Cape is felt in every detail.
Today, reimagined and reopened in 2024, Cape Grace remains true to that original vision — an enduring presence on the marina, shaped by its past, and quietly continuing to write its story with every guest who walks through its doors.
