Design That Embraces the Landscape
Positioned among granite boulders on a rocky kopje, Jabali Ridge’s architecture is shaped by the natural surroundings. Its structures are built using curved thatch, timber, and stone to visually and physically blend with the granite landscape and native vegetation.
Suites are open-plan and designed to maximise natural airflow, reducing the need for mechanical cooling. This reflects Asilia’s philosophy of creating structures that exist within the environment, not imposed upon it.

History & Story
Jabali Ridge was established in 2017 by Asilia Africa to introduce high-end, conservation-focused tourism to Ruaha National Park, one of Tanzania’s largest and most remote protected areas. While Ruaha is rich in biodiversity, including Africa’s largest lion population, it had historically received low visitor numbers due to its remoteness and limited infrastructure.
Asilia saw an opportunity to change this by creating a flagship property that would attract discerning travellers while supporting conservation efforts and local development. The location selected for Jabali is perched on a rocky kopje overlooking the Mwagusi River, offering panoramic views of baobab-studded plains and miombo woodlands.
The name « Jabali, » which means « rock » in Swahili, reflects the camp’s physical environment and its grounded philosophy. Built using timber, thatch, and stone, the camp’s natural curves mirror the granite boulders around it. Suites are open-plan and designed for airflow, reducing dependence on air conditioning and aligning with Asilia’s low-impact approach.
Jabali Ridge marked a turning point in safari lodge design. Departing from colonial themes, it introduced a modern and minimalist aesthetic rooted in African materials and landscapes. This distinctive design drew international attention and helped establish Jabali as a leader in the evolution of eco-luxury travel.
Though not a scientific research hub like some of Asilia’s other properties, Jabali contributes meaningfully through conservation levies, employment of local staff, and support for Asilia’s broader Impact programs. These include education sponsorships, training, and enterprise initiatives in nearby communities such as Tungamalenga.
