History & Story
Renowned as one of Australia’s enduring luxury resorts, Tropical North Queensland hideaway Silky Oaks Lodge reopened in December 2021 following a multimillion-dollar rebuild by the team at Baillie Lodges, bringing their globally lauded style and sensitivity to a genuinely iconic lodge and location in the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest. Set above the gently flowing Mossman River and among the leafy canopy, the airy open spaces of the lodge envelope guests in the sights and sounds of an extraordinary natural theatre.

Silky Oaks Lodge provides a hub for the many wonderful adventures and discoveries on offer in Tropical North Queensland. Within easy reach are Mossman Gorge, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef – Port Douglas – and the magnificent wilderness of Cape Tribulation. To the west lies the Atherton Tablelands, the last frontier that divides the coast from the vast Queensland outback. Guests at Silky Oaks have the chance to learn about the Indigenous culture of the local Kuku Yalanji people who have lived in the Daintree continuously and have a deep connection with the country. Accessed via the pretty coastal resort town of Port Douglas, just 20minutes drive from the lodge, the Great Barrier Reef offers a boatload of aquatic adventures to discover the kaleidoscope of corals and marine life in the complex and magnificent reef system.
Tropical North Queensland is a remarkable region where Australia’s celebrated Daintree Rainforest meets the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. At an estimated 180 million years old, the Daintree is regarded as the world’s oldest living rainforest with a fascinating ecosystem revealing ancient plants as well as hundreds of species of birds and wildlife. It’s also home to the Indigenous Kuku Yalanji people who have a deep connection with the land

At Silky Oaks Lodge, 40 luxury treehouse-style suites welcome in the sights and sounds of the Daintree Rainforest. A Baillie Lodges-led reimagining of the treetop hideaways brings a fresh, contemporary spin on the classic ‘Queenslander’ with signature clean lines, generous appointments and pared back, refined luxury. Stepping outside, generous verandahs open to the gloriously verdant rainforest and feature the essential tropical accessory: an inviting hammock ready to sway in the afternoon breeze.

Dining at Silky Oaks Lodge celebrates the abundance of fresh ingredients harvested in Tropical North Queensland’s rich food bowl. The dining experience combines local ingredients with the nation’s finest premium produce in a refreshing and contemporary Australian menu. A thriving kitchen garden provides both singing-fresh ingredients for the table as well as a chance for guests to wander among its prolific greenery and learn a little along the way. More than 100 plant types include the Mt White finger lime, red dragon fruit, pandan and tamarind. Guests will see many ingredients growing just moments before they are picked for the days’ menu, making one of the shortest paddock to plate journeys around.
