History & Story
The words ‘unique’ and ‘one-of-a-kind’ are often used with abandon. But when it comes to Sanctuary Lodge, a Belmond Hotel, they couldn’t ring more true. The only hotel adjacent to Machu Picchu, it serves as a gateway to the Inca world.
Guests enjoy unrivaled, out-of-hours access to the citadel with expert guidance. Waking before sunrise, they can be the first through the gates. In solitude, the mountains look magnificent emerging from a cloak of mist. For the active, challenging climbs up lesser-trodden paths are rewarded with phenomenal vistas. Bespoke treks and tours take guests off the beaten track to picture-perfect views.
The hotel offers the best of both adventure and relaxation. Out front, explorers come and go. At the back is an oasis of calm. Hummingbirds dart among the collection of rare orchids, numbering over 140 varieties. Butterflies lift into the gentle breeze. Massages rooted in Inca techniques soothe trek-weary muscles. Yoga or meditation sessions are enhanced by views of Huayna Picchu. For full spiritual immersion, a shaman can perform an ancient Pachamama ritual asking for health and prosperity.
Come evening, a culinary Peruvian journey awaits at Tampu Restaurant. Local delicacies like creamy Oxapampa cheese and Sacred Valley mushrooms cannot fail to entice.
