SUMAQ MACHU PICCHU HOTEL
History & Story
The accountant Anibal Clavijo never thought that the strength of his family was going to make him the owner of his own hotel in one of the new wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
In 1972, this hard working man started working in a lodge in the jungle, which French design taught him the secrets of the hospitality business. After he left, Anibal took charge of the business and opened different properties in Machu Picchu (Cusco) and Lima.
After 30 years in the business, he thought he made his dream come true, but his wife, Carmen Begazo convinced him to open their own hotel. The Clavijo Begazo family started the project in the Inca citadel in 2002. Their son, Anibal, was in charge of the feasibility studies and Mrs. Carmen designed the structure and decoration with Inca themes.
After five years, the Clabe Andina group opened the Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel – which means beautiful in Quechua – the first five stars hotel in Aguas Calientes. The building counts with 62 rooms, the Aqlla Spa, the Suquy Café Bar and the Qunuq restaurant, in charge of the Chef Carlos Pardo Figueroa.
