History & Story
The walls of the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay echo with 900 years of history. Founded in 1118 by a handful of monks, the Abbaye grew to become a Cistercian Abbey in 1147, with a community of 200 monks. Continuing its activity over the centuries despite wars and epidemics, the Abbaye was emptied of its occupants in 1790, when the National Assembly divided it up and it was transformed into a simple stone quarry, thus doomed to oblivion. Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild brought the place back from the ashes almost a century later. She scrupulously rebuilt each building and added new constructions, shaping the estate as we know it today. The Second World War signalled the end of the Rothschild era with a final coup d’éclat (the statues from the Château de Versailles were sheltered in the woods of the Abbey, under the noses of the German occupiers). Since then, the Abbey has passed through several hands, and in 2023 it begins a new page in its history, ready to shine throughout the world.

Our contemporary retreat also offers all year round surprising attractions for entertainment lovers: after a group warm-up on our new padel court on the water or a boat trip on the lake, head to the games room, movie theater, or karaoke session, or take part in a « blind test » musical quiz, all without stepping foot outside the estate.
To fight against the “Sunday night blues,” the property offers its guests guided tours to discover the historic secrets of the estate, as well as a wellness escape in collaboration with the premium skincare brand Tata Harper.

There is an array of activities for families to enjoy. Children can meet with our Fantastic Animals: Alpacas and peacocks roam freely. The pond is home to a fleet of remote-control boats, patiently awaiting their turn to embark an exciting voyage. And for the littlest adventurers aged 3 to 8, our indoor Kids’ Club available all year round, designed and build with the renowned Tartine et Chocolat brand, is bursting with entertainment options. There’s a thrilling games room, art studio, and charming village area. Access is free under adult supervision. Babysitting is offered by the hotel at extra charge.
