History & Story
The former Alcron hotel has a long and rich history as one of the Czech Republic’s most famous hotels. Founded by Alois Krofta, who saw an opportunity to build one of the country’s first world-class hotels. The Alcron opened in 1932, taking its name from a boat in ancient Greek mythology. State-of-the-art for its time, the Alcron was renowned for its innovative equipment and top-notch services, all overseen by Krofta himself. It quickly became a favourite destination for celebrities and dignitaries.
Along with a reputation for luxury, the Alcron also attracted the great and good due to its close proximity to the famed Lucerna Palace, a hub of cultural activity in the heart of Prague.
When Czechoslovakia emerged from Communist rule in 1989, Krofta’s descendants lodged a restitution claim for the hotel, which had by then fallen into disrepair. They then sold it to the WSF Group, which set about bringing the hotel back to its former glory. By the end of the 1990s, the Alcron was re-established as a byword for luxury in Prague, attracting famous guests. Known for its culinary excellence, the hotel’s legendary Alcron restaurant, was awarded Michelin star in years 2012-2017.
In 2022 the renovation of the entire hotel started and on March 1, 2023, one of Prague’s Art Nouveau landmarks was reborn as the Almanac X Prague, a 204-room hotel steps away from the city’s UNESCO-listed Old Town and the historic Wenceslas Square. The property is the first in the Almanac X lifestyle collection, a youthful, culinary-driven hotel. Local architecture firm Marani and Barcelona’s Tres Cinco Uno interior design studio led the €20 million refurbishment, drawing on the building’s 1930s-era glamor and local art and craftsmanship to conceive of a modern, colorful tribute to Czech design. Gastronomy is at the heart of the property, with an Art Deco-inspired cocktail bar, a specialty coffee shop, and a restaurant reinventing classic Czech recipes and a unique plant-forward concept. Local experiences immerse guests in the cultural and gastronomic flavor of the city while uncovering lesser-known attractions—from architectural marvels and historic beer halls to hip dockside neighborhoods.

Fun Facts
Almanac X Prague began life as the Alcron Hotel, founded by Alois Krofta, who saw an opportunity in the foundation of an independent Czechoslovakia in 1918 to build one of Prague’s first world-class hotels. The Alcron opened in 1932, taking its name from a boat in ancient Greek mythology.
The hotel was state-of-the-art in its design, interior furnishings and equipment, a tradition continued by Almanac X to this day. Krofta was renowned for designing innovative equipment used in the hotel and for personally ensuring guest services were top-notch. The reputation of the Alcron spread quickly, attracting First Republic Czechoslovak celebrities and dignitaries.
Krofta’s ownership of the hotel was “supervized” during the Second World War by the Nazi occupiers, but it retained its reputation as a place of luxury. During the Communist era it was nationalized, and Krofta died a broken man in 1958, having seen his life’s work apparently destroyed.
After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Krofta’s descendants lodged a restitution claim for the hotel. When they finally got it back from the state, the property had fallen into disrepair. The WSF Group bought the hotel and set to work restoring it to its former glory. By the end of the 1990s, the Alcron had been re-established as a byword for luxury in Prague.
The Alcron converted to the Almanac X brand in 2022. Extensive renovation works began, including an interior redesign in a chic, elegant style throughout the lobby, guest rooms, famous restaurant and bar, and roof terrace.
Owned by the Haselbacher family, based in Vienna, the hotel today presents a distinctively pan-European style of luxury. An unforgettable interior design inspired by Prague from Tres Cinco Uno creative studio combines with the finest locally inspired cuisine and expert service for a uniquely modern Czech experience.
