History and Story
Mr William Reid commenced construction of Reid’s in 1887 but sadly he died before the work was completed. The hotel was opened in November 1891 by his two sons, William and Alfred Reid.
The original building was designed by the architects Mr. J.T. Mickelthwaite and Mr. Somers Clarke of Dean’s Yard, Westminster, London, the latter having recently completed the design for the well-known Shepherd’s Hotel in Cairo.
The Reid family sold their interest in the hotel in 1925 to an English company, Reid’s Palace Hotel Ltd which, in turn, was dissolved in 1937 when Island Hotels (Madeira) Ltd was formed.
Shortly after acquiring the hotel, Island Hotels increased its capacity by constructing the East wing. Later, in 1966/67, the Garden Wing was built. The hotel was refurbished and modernized in 1972/73, and again in 1990 when several luxury suites were added. At that time, just prior to Reid’s centenary, the dining room was redecorated in its original classic style while the Cocktail Bar and terrace along with the Grill Room restaurant were completely rebuilt and refurbished.
In July 1996, Reid’s was taken over by Orient-Express Hotels Inc. (now known as Belmond after a major rebranding), the company that re-launched the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and managed a luxury collection of hotels world-wide. The hotel then reverted to its original name, Reid’s Palace.
Today Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Madeira has 111 luxury bedrooms, 47 suites. From the sensational Michelin-starred William Restaurant, which blends the contemporary cuisine with the best of Madeiran production, to The Dinning Room with its glittering chandeliers and the more informal Villa Cipriani, perched on a clifftop, our dining options are irresistible. The two large heated swimming pools are surrounded by a sunbathing area where a buffet lunch is served throughout the year; there is also a private jetty with secluded sun terraces. Other facilities include The Spa, featuring treatments by Aromatherapy Associates, with an incorporated State-of-the-Art fitness centre. The hotel can arrange for guests to enjoy water skiing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, big game fishing and golf at the 27 golf course at Santo da Serra or 18 hole course in Palheiro Golf. Walks along Madeira’s magnificent levadas, boat trips and visits to local places of interest are regular features of the hotel’s programs.
