GRAND HOTEL LES TROIS ROIS BASEL
History & Story
The first official record of the “Three Kings” or “At the Three Kings” at Blumenrain 8 in Basel dates back to 1681. Situated near the main water and overland trade routes at Schifflände, the hostelry has expanded over the centuries with the addition of various buildings, primarily former noble residences. In 1841 and 1842, the affluent master tailor Johann Jakob Senn acquired the estate. Senn inaugurated “Des Trois Rois” on February 16, 1844. Since then, this renowned hotel has been managed by a succession of different owners.
In 2004, entrepreneur Dr. h.c. Thomas Straumann acquired the historic hotel. He oversaw its renovation to reflect the period around 1844, adhering to national heritage criteria. Simultaneously, the hotel was equipped with luxurious infrastructure to meet the demands of the most discerning guests, befitting its status as one of Switzerland’s premier hotels. On March 20, 2006, Les Trois Rois, Basel’s most storied hotel, reopened its doors to the public.
Date Renewal
Between 2004 and 2006, the buildings were restored under the direction of Basel architect Christian Lang, adhering to national heritage criteria. Sections were reconstructed based on the original plans.
From 2023 until late May 2025, the annex of the property underwent a complete renovation.
