Grantley Hall
History & Story
The opening of Grantley Hall as a luxury 5 star hotel and wellness retreat is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this 17th century Grade II* listed mansion house.
The property has a rich heritage and was originally built by the Norton family. It was passed down through the generations which included Lords, Barons and Members of Parliament before being bought by multimillionaire shipping magnate Sir Christopher Furness. Their son, Marmaduke, was a playboy of his time and eventually sold the house to Sir William Ackroyd, a carpet manufacturer from Bradford who was also High Sherriff of Yorkshire. During his time Grantley Hall entertained Queen Mary in 1937 and was given over to the war effort in WWII as a convalescence home to injured servicemen and proudly welcomed Dame Vera Lynn to sing to the troops.
Upon Sir William’s death the estate was sold to West Riding County Council who ran the Hall as a training centre until the 1990s when it transferred to private ownership. The current owner, Mrs Valeria Sykes, bought Grantley Hall in 2015 transforming the building and grounds into a luxury hotel.
Date Renewal
Full renovation and restoration of the existing building and creation of additional buildings was completed over a 4 year period. The owners were personally involved in the interior design and curation of artwork and sculptures displayed throughout the hotel and gardens. .Award winning landscape architect, Alistair Baldwin, recreated the formal gardens and restored the ornamental Japanese Gardens.
