History & Story
Amigo is a curious name, given the hotel’s history. The city council bought the building in 1522 and turned it into a prison. The Spanish rulers mistook its Flemish name “vrunt” to mean “vriend”, or amigo. The locals seem to have enjoyed this irony as the name stuck. Nowadays, the hotel sites on “Vruntstraat” (in Dutch) or “Rue de l’ Amigo “(in French). The Hotel was built in 1957 over 6 floors by the Blaton family for the Brussels World’s Fair of 1958. Rocco Forte Hotels took over Hotel Amigo in January 2000. The hotel has undergone a complete refurbishment to restore it to its former glory and to claim its rightful status as the best luxury hotel in the city. The interior of the hotel is a true artistic heritage preserved by Rocco Forte Hotels: Flemish tapestries of the eighteenth, and the authentic fifteenth century pavement (1620) in the lobby.
