History & Story
The land on which the hotel is located belonged to the Order of the Jesuits until the eighteenth century when the King of Naples, Ferdinand IV of Bourbon acquired the property and gave a part of it to his cousin Paul Leopold of Bourbon, Count of Syracuse. In 1792 the Count built Villa Poggio Siracusa whose sumptuous rooms hosted dames and barons eager to leisure in that joyful Eden. The tragic death of the beloved of the Count, started a period of decline that lasted until 1885 when the Cortchacow family bought the area.
The villa returned to its original glory by becoming the theatre of stories, passions and famous receptions. The new owners started the striking creation of a dacha in the English Gothic style to be used for a future visit of the illustrious cousin, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The hotel is located right on the remains of the never completed dacha.
Roberto Fernandes, the Neapolitan engineer and great-grandfather of the actual owner, bought the land in 1959 and commissioned the architect Gio Ponti to transform the place into a hotel. The historical legacy, the extraordinary location and natural colors inspired Ponti to create a structure rooted in the earth characterized by the verticality of the ancient dacha and the Sorrento coast.
The Parco dei Principi hotel was inaugurated on 11 April 1962 and since then has remained evidence of the absolute and joyful intuition of the engineer Fernandes.
Date Renewal
Parco dei Principi is a masterpiece of Italian design, we constantly renovate the property throughout the winter season. The last year the beach club restaurant, Poggio Siracusa, was renovated, and the 2025 renovation will be related to the restroom
Main Strengths, Special Touch
Parco dei Principi is a testament to the timeless creativity of Gio Ponti, one of the most enlightened advocates of Italian architecture of the 20th century and a great source of inspiration for many designers worldwide (Lina Bo Bardi, Renzo Piano, Massimiliano Fuksas, Patricia Urquiola)
Perched on a Sorrento clifftop, Parco dei Principi is a Gio Ponti masterpiece that’s all about sleek, modernist vibes and stunning views.
Opened in 1962, this place shines with its white-and-blue décor, a private beach with secret tunnels and a saltwater pool surrounded by exotic plants and lush gardens.
Minimal atmosphere and space characterise the 96 rooms with original furnishings designed by Gio Ponti. A variety of ceramic floors – as many as rooms – in shades of blue and white to reflect the colours of the sea and sky of Sorrento: moons, circles, triangles, stars and leaves are also used to tell a different story in every room.
At the Restaurant Gio Ponti, a spectacular window over the Gulf of Naples and its islands, the day starts with a great breakfast. Through striking tunnels in the rock, you arrive at the private beach. The pier is home during the summer months to the restaurant Poggio Siracusa where you can enjoy the original Mediterranean cuisine or in the night dinner at the beautiful Restaurant Gio Ponti.
Among the horizon, in the middle of enormous botanical park, there is a seawater swimming pool designed by Gio Ponti as ‘a mirror of water to wood nymphs‘.
Parco dei Principi is an excellent location for pleasant walks through the typical craft shops and luxury shopping streets in the centre of Sorrento, and for excursions to the nearby Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri and the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Location
A green ambiance flourishes in the ancient part of the villa, a 27 thousand sqm botanical garden curated in the minimal details is almost overwhelming and home to splendid antique structures and a seawater swimming pool designed by Ponti as a ‘mirror of water to wood nymphs’.
Descending the rocky cliff is an access to the hotel’s private beach, touching the emerald waters of the Mediterranean Sea and ideally placed next to the nearby Poggio Siracusa restaurant for a taste of local delicacies and pizza
The Parco dei Principi’s botanical garden is home to many wild and rare plant species, which makes the property surrounding the hotel feel tropical, exclusive, and remote.
Sorrento’s town center is conveniently located a short 15-20 minute walk from the hotel’s doors. Its narrow streets are dotted with plenty of bars, local restaurants, cafes, antique stores and artisan shops. We also offer a convenient and complimentary shuttle into town as well

Fun Facts
Built in the mid-1960s, the Parco dei Principi hotel is a structure of marvel and wonder, it’s also the very first “design hotel” of its kind, which truly set the stage for many of today’s modern boutique hotels. Entering it felt like going back in time to the early 1960s, when clean lines, geometric shapes, balanced colour palettes, and simplicity were all the rage. Interestingly, in an effort to give each room its own unique personality, Gio Ponti personally designed an astounding 96 different geometric floor tiling patterns for the building—one for each of the 96 rooms, meaning there’s a bit of unique style and personality behind every door.
