Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald
History & Story
The history of the Schweizerhof in Grindelwald is closely connected to the rise of tourism in the Bernese Oberland. A blacksmith’s forge once stood on part of today’s foundations, but it was destroyed in the great fire of 1892. The building was quickly rebuilt in 1893 according to standardized plans; the chalet-style façade with its original inscription is still visible today. Around 1905, an extension was added, offering 20 guest rooms and a dining hall.
Between 1905 and 1919, tourism expanded rapidly with the opening of important mountain railways. The Schweizerhof was raised by three additional floors and reached its present appearance in 1912, becoming one of Grindelwald’s leading hotels. A large hotel park, winter ice rink, quiet location, and electric light reflected the modern comfort of the time.
From 1920 to 1961, the hotel was continuously modernized, including the installation of a passenger lift and improvements to kitchen and park facilities. During the Second World War, it was requisitioned by the Swiss Army and used for military medical services. After the war, recovery was gradual, with renewed investment in the 1950s. In the early 1960s, the owners decided to hand over the hotel.
In 1962, Lotti and Otto Hauser acquired the Schweizerhof and extensively renovated it over the following years. In 1980, their son Otto Hauser Jr. took over the hotel, later joined by his wife Anneliese. Under their management, the hotel was modernized, expanded with new rooms, suites, wellness facilities, and public spaces, and became a Romantik Hotel in 1989.
From 1998 onward, the vision of the Swiss Alp Resort was realized. After long planning and construction phases, the chalets were completed by 2009, marking a new era. Today, the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof, Swiss Alp Resort & Spa continues to be carefully maintained and continually improved, combining tradition with modern comfort.
