Sant’Angelo, Matera
History and Story
• In the 1990s, Matera began to emerge as a tourist destination, and in the heart of the enchanting Sassi, La Casa di Lucio opened its doors to the first travelers. Lucio and Anna, with their warmth, made every guest feel at home.
• The year 2010 marked a period of significant changes for Sant’Angelo. With the acquisition of Sant’Angelo and Regia Corte, our family expanded its horizons in hospitality, creating two key landmarks in the heart of Matera.
• In 2020, we enthusiastically embraced innovation. This led to the birth of two revolutionary projects, Più Sud and Goccia Goccia, which brought a breath of fresh air to Matera’s hospitality scene.
• Now, in 2024, we are ready for a new beginning. With the launch of our new brand « Sant’Angelo » and the introduction of Biagio and Andrea, the new generation, we continue our tradition with a touch of modernity and innovation.
• Sant’Angelo is not just a hotel; it is a meeting point between the past and the future. We are here to share our passion for Matera with you and to offer an authentic and unforgettable experience. Welcome to our family. Welcome to Sant’Angelo.
Renovation Date
2010
The redevelopment and expansion project was born out of the need to increase the quality and service standards of the existing structure, with the ambition, however, to also become a project for the entire city of Matera, contributing to the recovery and conservation of the monumental characteristics of this important site. This gave rise to a series of reflections to investigate the possibility of broadening the horizon of the project and pursuing a different target from the initial one, with the intention of infusing a propulsive impulse into the local market.

Location
• The famous Sassi di Matera (the “stones” of Matera), in the middle of a karst plateau with deep sinkholes, are very ancient, simple dwellings carved in the ochrecoloured tuff of the ravines. Built very close together in inaccessible areas of the region of Basilicata (Italy) by people fleeing Longobard invasions and Moorish raids, they are now the historical centre of the town of Matera. People were allowed to live in them until the 1960s.
• The Sassi then became the subject of studiesand were turned into modern habitable buildings.
• In 1993, they became a Unesco World Heritage Site. The old town is still being restored and many districts are being renovated. The original architecture will be preserved, and the cultural and tourist services replaced, in order to give new life to this town and make it suitable for visitors.
