Michela Nicosia started her career in the UK, then worked in other luxury properties in Germany, the Caribbean and Colorado, USA. In June 1998 she managed the very first opening of the Splendido Mare and now she will be the guardian of this completely re-imagined hotel, after a brilliant career of 20 years as Assistant Manager of Hotel Splendido & Area Director of Reservations and Revenue Management.

History & Story
The Mare’s journey towards its current incarnation began when the owners, two local brothers, decided to split the property. One half stayed as a hotel and the other was offered for sale. Seeing its potential, Belmond (formerly Orient-Express Hotels) purchased it in 1997.
When Splendido Mare, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino launched a year later, it served as an extension to the celebrated Hotel Splendido on the hillside above Portofino. It gained rapt reviews from the start: bon vivant Michael Winner exhorted, « Go there, you won’t regret it ».
In 2021, following Belmond’s acquisition by luxury group LVMH, the Mare reopened. Shining with a strong and independent new personality, the stylish social hub still echoes the nautical spirit and relaxed refinement of its roots.

A gym, set a few steps aways from the hotel, was added in 2024.
2021 – A complete renovation of this property was led by the contemporary Parisian designer studio Festen, known for a drawing on tradition and retaining a historic essence and stylish charm, while embracing the strong geometries of contemporary design. Festen’s inclusion of authentic mid-century antiques from such iconic designers as Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa speak to the highpointof Italian design that feels both casual yet considered.

• Take to the water on the hotel’s wooden boat for exciting sailing along the promontory to discover San Fruttuoso Abbey.
• Head to the Mount of Portofino for a walk, or electric bicycle ride, along the Natural Park’s trails. Explore the eco farm at La Portofinese and learn about olive oil production at their new olive mill.
Fun Facts
Acclaimed Jack Savoretti, young acoustic singer of Italian descent, wanted to seal his special bond with Portofino at the Splendido Mare with a very exclusive concert staged in the beloved Piazzetta.
