Hotel Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites & Residences
History & Story
Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences has a historical provenance dating back to Tudor England and the court of Queen Elizabeth I. It is during this tumultuous period that a prestigious landowner and treasurer to the Queen, Lord Dacre, drew up a scheme to build Alms-houses on the “Tothill Fields” of Westminster.
The small cottages known as the Emmanuel Alms-houses were built on the current site of the hotel, to house and educate 20 underprivileged children. This charitable endeavour prospered over the years, culminating in five schools, identifiable by their distinct blazers as Bluecoat, Greencoat, Greycoat and Browncoat schools.
