Fun Facts
The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid was born from the vision of King Alfonso XIII, who wanted a grand luxury hotel in Madrid to welcome the growing international elite traveling across Europe in the early 20th century. During a meeting in Deauville, he convinced Belgian businessman George Marquet to build the hotel, leading to the creation of one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks.
Construction began on March 11, 1911, on the former site of the Dukes of Medinaceli palace and was completed in just 18 months and 11 days. When it opened on October 12, 1912, with a grand celebration attended by 4,000 guests, it became the largest hotel in Europe, offering 800 rooms and pioneering modern comforts such as private bathrooms and telephones in every room—an innovation that even brought plumbing specialists from London and helped introduce the profession of plumbers in Spain.
The hotel quickly became a meeting point for artists, scientists, writers and intellectuals. Among its most notable guests were Pablo Picasso, who stayed in 1917 while working on sets for the Ballets Russes; Marie Curie, who visited in 1919; and Albert Einstein, who stayed in 1923 during his lectures in Madrid. The surrealist artist Salvador Dalí was also a frequent guest and once sketched on a suite wall, only for it to be accidentally cleaned away by housekeeping.
The hotel is deeply connected to literature and culture. Ernest Hemingway mentioned it in The Sun Also Rises, while writers such as Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez were regular guests. The famous glass dome hosted elegant afternoon dances in the 1920s, even featuring performances by Josephine Baker.
During the Spanish Civil War, the hotel was transformed into a military hospital, with its glass dome providing natural light for surgical operations. Decades later, during the 23-F Spanish coup attempt, it became the temporary headquarters for journalists and government coordination, with hotel kitchens preparing more than 1,500 sandwiches for the Congress.
Today, part of the UNESCO-listed Paisaje de la Luz, The Palace continues to host world leaders, artists and celebrities, remaining a living symbol of Madrid’s cultural, historical and social life.
