History & Story
Arriving in Ostuni from any direction, it’s impossible to miss it: the former Manifattura Tabacchi, now Vista Ostuni, stands there,majestic yet unassuming, as if keeping watch over the ‘White City’ and the 3,000-year-old trees dotting the Plain of Olives. With its origins dating back to the 14th century, the structure has become part of the natural landscape. Over the centuries, its purpose has changed several times, yet the same spirit of hospitality has remained constant: once a convent, then a hospital, now a hotel. It has embraced the vision of a determined and virtuous nun who turned it into a sanctuary for the vulnerable and alone, young and old, offering shelter, hope, and education to young women in need. Later, another forward-thinker transformed it into one of Italy’s first socially responsible workplaces in a postwar climate where “enlightenment” was associated more with blackouts and curfews than with ideals. In his Manifattura Tabacchi, discussions of women’s rights took root, childcare services were established, and spaces for worship and community weremade available to workers.
The building has witnessed generations come and go, customs evolve, and time reshape the world around it — yet it has remained unmistakably itself, steadfast and solid.
Returning it to the community after more than sixty years of abandonment — restored with utmost care and respect for its identity — takes on enormous symbolic weight. In 2025, the formerManifattura Tabacchi once again becomes an emblem of Ostuni – not only as an historic landmark reborn, but as a beacon of a gentler, more sustainable kind of luxury hospitality.
