THE LODGE AT VAIL
History & Story
In March of 1957, after seven hours of climbing, two former members of the 10th Mountain Division, Peter Seibert and Earl Eaton, arrived at the summit of what was later to become known as Vail Mountain. On that golden afternoon, as they dropped into the untracked powder and carved their way back to the valley floor, the dream of Vail began.
Since 1962, The Lodge at Vail has been a prime destination for visitors both frequent and new – from all corners of the Earth. The Lodge at Vail’s natural surroundings – crisp, white mountaintops and snow-trimmed evergreens have become synonymous with history and adventure. Fulfilling the now common fantasy of the warm, cozy suite to come home to after a day of skiing in the frosty air, The Lodge at Vail has become a classic icon of the Vail Valley.

Fun Facts
When Vail Mountain opened for skiing on December 15, 1962, with a single gondola, a pair of chair lifts, eight ski instructors, and a $5 lift ticket, The Lodge at Vail had been open for merely a month. However, designed with a classic Alpine character, at the base of the ski slopes, The Lodge at Vail soon became the cornerstone property of what would eventually become the vibrant Vail Village of today.
From its humble beginnings, Vail’s founders could never have dreamed that their vision, (with a gondola ride, breakfast, dinner, and lodging priced at just $10 in 1963), would someday turn out to be North America’s premier ski resort. Nor could they have imagined that the classic 65-room chalet-style inn just steps from Chair 1 would one day transform into a world-renowned mountain hotel and spa.
